Hello
In our organization we have developed software for several years in the field of Modelling and Simulation for Process Analysis. The process of software development has been done by independent projects. Now, Software Product Lines (SPL) has become a new paradigm for strategic reuse based on the common aspects of the family of systems. We are developing systems for process analysis (process stages, an entire process and integrated processes) and for all cases we have notice that many common aspects are found. Reviewing the proceedings of events and papers in magazines about SPL we have considered that our organization could make a transition for SPL development creating a domain-specific architecture. We have not found in literature reviewed articles related with the application of SPL in the field of developing software for Process Analysis (Mathematical Modelling, Process simulation, Process design & Process optimisation) Do you know sources for finding information about the application of SPL in the fields mentioned? What would you recommend us to begin the analysis? |

Hello Rafael,
some of the problems in your domain are shared by the automotive industry. For instances they use mathematical modelling a lot in these days (read they use Matlab/Simulink). Here variability in the to be used models is a key property of the problem domain (http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/xpl/freeabs_all...unt=48&index=10, you should contact the author for the paper) They also have the problem with multiple systems communicating with each other (in the car internal network). I guess this is also a problem in your domain. Some properties might be shared with other domains for which SPL has been applied to. I don't know enough about your specific domain to be able to tell you more. Often an SPL approach is being used without calling it SPL. You will probably find some SPL experts around here which would be able to help you with an inital assesment and the transition process itself( Regards Danilo -------------------- Danilo Beuche, pure-systems GmbH

Danilo:
I have read your reply to the topic Getting Started in the field of the application of SPL techniques in process analysis. Our institution have developed software for sugar and by-products industries in the last two decades working by individual projects. Now, we are trying to the change our minds considering the common aspects of the systems. I have been reading many papers about SPL in the literature and among then I have found your articles: "Variability management with feature models" "SPL engineering with feature models" If you send to me your slides about the tutorial presented in SPLC 05 & 06 I will be so glad. I could send to you more information about the family of systems we are working on if you are interested.
